Style Icon – Rachel Bilson
Occasionally—very occasionally—we think of the assorted celebrities who frequently appear on our site as our team. We’re not sure there is a sport that allows such a large team (athletics are not our forte) and clearly the people we feature don’t attend practice together, but bear with us anyway. On this team, you’ve got your star players like Kate Moss, your wild cards like Chloe Sevigny, and a few go-to girls who consistently deliver. Rachel Bilson falls into the latter category, as she’s always a dependable source for accessible, understated, and chic personal style. One of the reasons Bilson is beloved by readers and editors alike is because she’s so adept at dressing for her figure. Tiny frames like Bilson’s can easily get overwhelmed but she avoids this common mistake by sticking to sleek (not skintight) pieces and silhouettes. She also keeps everything in correct proportions by accentuating her waist with belts, tucked in shirts, and tops with sashes or other waist details. While musing the oh-so pressing question of, “What would Rachel wear?” we knew we’d need to pull some classic pieces with a twist, like the See by Chloe coat above. The timeless swing shape combined with the uncommon dark orange color simply seemed fitting and brilliantly Bilsonesque!
- NARS/Phillip Lim 3.1 Fall Palette ($80)
Compact and cute, this custom kit from NARS was created with Phillip Lim 3.1 and part of the proceeds benefits Al Gore’s The Climate Project. The palette contains two shadows (Night Fever, black with silver glitter, and Ondine, plum with gold shimmer), two lipsticks (Promiscuous, honey beige, and Viridiana, rich burgundy), blush (Luster, sheer golden apricot), and all-over color (The Multiple in Malibu, pinkish brown).
- See By Chloe Short Swing Coat ($582)
The cropped sleeves and A-line cut of this coat are both fashionable and perfect on petites. We’re simply mad about the marmalade color too; it’s unique and seriously memorable, and when worn with the Fendi sunglasses as she is. Wow, just wow.
- Polished Cuff ($5.80)
Bilson avoids looking overly accessorized by judiciously rationing the amount of jewelry she wears at any given time. While she clearly has savvy editing skills, this doesn’t mean she limits herself to safe pieces. This two-inch wide, polished metal cuff embodies this spirit (and is ridiculously inexpensive).
- Development Horse Print Camisole ($220)
As mentioned above, Bilson tends to pick pieces that are body-conscious but modest, so we thought this Development top would be a smart selection. The mushroom-colored, silk chiffon camisole buttons up the front and has a subtle print of horses.
- Lanvin Key West Oversized Sunglasses ($285)
Bilson’s not afraid of a bold sunglass (see yesterday’s A Guy’s Opinion for example), so we selected these slightly oversized Lanvin frames. The semi-rimless style is intriguing and the Dark Tortoise shade is universally flattering.
- Vanessa Bruno Athe Pleated Front Mini Skirt ($220)
The narrow fit of this gray wool skirt would be a slam-dunk style-wise. The pleated detailing on the front of the skirt is fantastic without being fussy.
- BCBG Tall Leather Boot ($350)
We could definitely see Bilson tooling around town in these foot-friendly flat leather boots. The above pair are by BCBG and they are quite similar to the tres popular Lanvin Flat Knee Boots we’ve seen on everyone this season.
